Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Hidden Valley
BUNA offers one of the most adventurous trekking in the mid west Himalaya towards the world 7th highest Mt. Dhaulagiri 8,167 meters and to its base camp. Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Hidden Valley trekking starting with an interesting drive to Darbang after passing several nice town and city of Pokhara and Beni, on reaching at Darbang, adventure begins on the low warm area following the Myagdi River upstream for a week through quaint farm villages of Magar tribe, and into pristine forest of rhododendron, pines and oaks tree lines and crossing several fresh streams and rivers and then entering the high ice and snow terrain on leaving the forested area behind, walk leads past Italian, Japanese mountaineering expeditions camps, then trekking over boulder of ice and snow to Dhaulagiri base camp for overnight stop at mere distance from the towering West Face of Mt. Dhaulagiri, after a wonderful moment trek continues to cross the high pass of this trip at French Pass and entering to Hidden Valley a vast level grassy field and from here heading towards the last pass of this adventure at Thapa / Dhampus pass and with a long descend to the charming village at Marpha.
Day to Day Itinerary
Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu and transfer to hotel
On arrival our BUNA staff will receive with a warm welcome and garland and then drive to the hub of Kathmandu city at Thamel area, the most interesting hot spot of Nepal, then transfer to Hotel Amaryllis, where our guide will brief regarding your stay in Nepal and information on trekking, sightseeing with us.
Day 02: In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour.
Morningas per the time informed our cultural guide will pick you for half day sightseeing tour at places of interest in and around Kathmandu city, Kathmandu area is rich and full of cultural and historical sites and listed as World Heritage Sites, after an impressive tour afternoon free at leisure and preparation for the trek to Dhaulagiri.
Day 03: Drive to Beni 940 m – 07 hrs journey.
Starting early morning for an interesting drive towards Beni town, drive leads through the main Nepal highway that connects East, West and Southern routes, after 4-5 hrs of good journey arriving at a famed and renowned Pokhara city, a paradise city where Annapurna Mountains reflects on the pristine Phewa Lake, after a brief moment here drive continues towards west and reaching at Beni town for overnight stop by the Mygdi River.
Day 04: Drive to Darbang 1,235 m and trek to River side and camp - 04 hrs.
Morning another short drive to start this adventurous trekking to Darbang town, the ride is for few hours through many farm villages and farm fields, on reaching at Darbang town the gateway to Dhaulagiri base camp, Dhorpatan and Dolpo area. From here following the river Mygdi upstream with few ups and down and reaching at campsite by the river for overnight stop after 3-4 hours of good first day trek.
Day 05: Trek to Bagar 2,375 m - 06 hrs.
From this nice river camp trek continues to follow the river upstream for a while passing several farm lands and scattered villages and hamlets and then reaching a small place at Jugepani for lunch as per the morning walking distance to reach here, after a nice rest here walk continues with a steep uphill to a ridge for 2 hours, on reaching the ridge top, then descending towards Bagar village for overnight camp near by the pre-primary school yard, this is a small farm village and this is will be our last village on route till Marpha is reached.
Day 06: Trek to Dovan 2,600 m- 06 hrs.
Morning walk leads to a pleasant walk for an hour through this farm village, and on leaving the village behind, starting with a climb into beautiful rhododendron, oaks and pines tree forest, with a steep climb most of the day and then following the raging Mygdi River all the way to Dovan for overnight camp. Dovan a small settlement with tea-houses and stores for the local trekkers and porters
Day 07: Trek to Chattere (Jungle Camp) 3,120 m – 06 hrs.
After a nice stop at Dovan trekking begins crossing a small tributary riverand then entering the thick forest and walking through most of the day, from here on walking in absolute wilderness with only the sound of the river and nature, slowly the walk reaches higher area in the middle of the forest to camp at Chattere also known as Jungle camp.
Day 08: Trek to Italian Camp 3,470m – 04 hrs.
From this quiet spot today walk will be easier trekking for only 3-4 hours the most, starting the morning walk with a slow climb through this thick woodlands with occasional views of South Flank of Dhaulagiri peak, as the walk progress reaching at Italian base camp for overnight camp, from here onwards on complete arid and barren terrain leaving the green vegetation and tree lines behind.
Day 9: Trek to Pakhaban (Japanese camp) 3,750m - 04 hrs.
A short day today due to gain in higher altitude, from Italian camp which is situated on the baseof South West Ridge of Dhaulagiri Mountain, from here morning leads to icy trail and rubble of moraine and climbing towards a ridge with Mygdi River down below originating from Dhaulagiri Glacier, after the short climb a gradual walk on grassy path for while till Pakhaban is reached for lunch and overnight camp. This camping spot situated on a gorge between the massif wall of Dhaulagiri South West Wall and Mana-Pathi chuli peaks.
Day 10: Trek to Dhaulagiri Base Camp 4,750 m – 05 hrs.
After a pleasant and amazing time, morning walk leads to a climb following the moraine path most of the way, passing few old camping spots of previous trekkers and expeditions groups, after few hours of steady walk, reaching to icy area with glacier, where the trail disappears important to follow the lead guide, to find the right path, after a strenuous walk finally reaching at world’s 7th highest mountain Dhaulagiri Base Camp, the highlight of this awesome adventure. From this camp Mt. Dhaulagiri summit is at mere distance and next to it rises Tukuche peak and several other peaks where the camp is enclosed with high mountains.
Day 11: Trek to Hidden Valley 4,900 m via French pass 5,360 m – 05 hrs.
From the base camp with awesome timein between high Himalayan peaks, walk leads higher but with a gradual pace on near level path, journey continues with close views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Tukuche peak and on the left side rises the twin peaks of Mana-Pathi Himal, as the walk progress then with a climb on the glacier and moraine rocky area towards the highest point of this trek at French pass at 5,360 meters, where the top is festooned with Buddhist prayer flags, from here descend for few hours to Hidden Valley for overnight after a good walk of 4-5 hours.
Day 12: Spare or contingency day at Hidden Valley.
We have reserved a day as spare or free day or contingency day in case of unfavorable bad weather, which might delay the walking distance to designate campsites and to take care of trekkers, staff and porters. If all goes well this spare day can be utilize in any other day before Marpha on route trekking. Optional hike on this wide Hidden valley, this is a summer pasture ground for grazing animals like Yaks and other cattle’s of the villages around Kaligandaki like Marpha-Tukcuhe and Jomsom area.
Day 13: To Yak Kharka 4,915 m via Thapa (Dhampus) pass 5,250 m - 05 hrs.
After a wonderful time in Hidden Valleytoday the walk leads to another pass called Thapa or Dhampus at 5,250 meters, morning walk leads on the easy flat trail towards east with gradual climb in between then reaching the rocky scree section in between the massif high mountains of Dhampus/ Thapa peak at 6, 135 meters and Tukuche peak at 6,920 meters, slowly the walk leads to a climb to the top of the pass here the ridge top lined with Buddhist prayer flags, overlooking awesome views of Mt. Annapurna range including Nilgiri’s peaks towards North East and slowly heading downhill towards back to vegetation of dwarf bushes of rhododendron and junipers and reaching to the last overnight camping at Yak Kharka (Aloobari) overlooking views of Nilgiri’s and Tukuche peaks.
Day 14: Trek to Marpha village 2,630 m – 04 hrs.
Today the last day trekking of this remarkable and amazing adventure, morning walk leads to a long descend through beautiful forest of firs, pines and rhododendron trees, with occasional views of high snow capped peaks after a long downhill reaching at a charming and beautiful village of Marpha where all the houses are white wash paints with huge area of apple and apricot orchard near the village with an interesting monastery, situated by the River Kali-Gandaki. On reaching Marpha a party time one can try the famous Marpha apples and its product like cider, brandy, local apple brew and juices.
Day 15: Drive to Beni 940 m and to Pokhara 950 m – 06 hrs journey.
After a most memorable time here at Marpha village and up in the mountain wilderness, morning taking a jeep ride on the rough dirt road towards Beni passing several nice farm villages of Kalapani, Lete, Ghasa and Tatopani with spectacular views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna which forms the world’s deepest valley of Kaligandaki River gorge. On reaching back to Beni on the good road for few hours to Pokhara, the most amazing tourist spot where the mountains meet the pristine, serene lake Phewa, in Pokhara with time for walk around the lake side.
Day 16: Drive back to Kathmandu - 05 hrs journey.
Morning taking charted coach (depending upon the number of people on the group) the drive leads on the same busy and interesting highway back to Kathmandu with few stops along the route, on reaching Kathmandu transfer to Hotel Amaryllis for comfort and exciting time and relaxation after a wonderful, enjoyable time in the world’s 7th highest Mt. Dhaulagiri area with excellent service of BUNA Trekking guide and management.
Day 17: International departure for homeward bound.
