Introduction:

Manaslu Circuit Trekking one of the restricted areas as well a fresh adventure destination where it was closed for many years and opened since last two decades, due to its closeness with Tibet-China frontier situated beyond Manaslu valley. Manaslu Circuit Trekking will be an exciting and interesting walk where you will be within beautiful natural surroundings of high green hills and scenic valley enclosed by high peaks that makes Manaslu a massive range located between Ganesh and Annapurna Himalaya.

Manaslu Circuit Trekking beside its awesome panorama of mountains on walks where culture and traditional farm life of high hill villages are equally fascinating as walk reaches from low warn paddy fields to cooler alpine hills and towards arctic temperature zone at Larke-la base and its high pass. An adventure that takes you around both scenic sides of world 8th highest Mt. Manaslu at the height of 8,163 m / 26,781 ft first climbed by Japanese Expedition on May 9th 1956. Mt. Manaslu was also known as Kutang among the native of Manaslu actually the name comes from ancient Hindu Sanskrit word Manas means ‘Mind of the Gods or Soul’. The Manaslu is similar to Upper Mustang Valley but bit different lance and geographically.

Manaslu Circuit starts from Kathmandu taking a great exciting overland drive to reach Nepal Mid-West at Gorkha areas around low warm areas of Arughat and Soti-Khola, where walks leads to higher cooler green hills following raging Buri-Gandaki River right up to upper and high Manaslu valley.

The walk leads past many farm villages of great interest enriched with ancient culture and custom of Buddhism religion, having rest for acclimatization at Sama-Gaon one of largest villages around Manaslu valley, where walk leads beyond to cross high Larke-La pass to reach Manang district around the trail of famous and popular Annapurna Circuit.

From this lovely place of Manang Dharapani village heading down towards warmer farm areas and then reaching at Kathmandu after a great marvellous adventure on Manaslu Circuit Trekking.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01:  Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
On reaching at Kathmandu international airport received by our staff and guide with a warm welcome then transfer to your hotel in the centre of Kathmandu city, after getting refreshed in your rooms join for group briefing regarding your stay in Nepal, where guides will provide information about the trek-local lodge-hotels-culture and other necessary information related to trekking. 

Day 02:  Free day in Kathmandu trek preparation with the optional tour.

In Kathmandu free day preparation for Manaslu Circuit Trekking, and to observe Nepalese culture and traditions, where one can join in our options for a wonderful and interesting sightseeing tour on request.

Day 03: Drive to Soti-Khola 730 m via Arughat 570 m - 06 hrs journeys.

Around Manaslu trekking starts with an early morning drive to Nepal Mid West,

where the journey leads on main Nepal highway past many interesting towns and

villages with farms to reach Gorkha district in Arughat.               

From here continue drive following raging Buri Gandaki River upstream on warm-

low areas of paddy fields and terraces to reach at Soti-Khola for the first overnight

stop of the adventure.

Day 04: Trek to Machha-Khola 930 m - 06 hrs.

Beginning our first day walks from Soti-Khola, where our route takes you into a steep valley, within thickly forested areas past number of small villages that dots the green hillside, and then walking into a wide valley opposite near a large tributary stream that joins Buri Gandaki River.

Nice views of a cultivated terrace of Lapses upper village as our walk descends to a wide, sandy riverbed following a trail that meanders below a steep, craggy valley side.

As walk progress leading to a climb towards Machha Khola for an overnight stop, a village with a number of teashops and a small lodge, Maccha Khola means a Fish Stream.

Day 05: Trek to Dobhan 1,070 m via Tatopani (Hot Spring) - 06 hrs.

From here onward encountering many interesting farm villages and neat cultivated fields as  vegetation changes slowly due to altitude and climate-wise, as our morning walk leads to cross over a stream where Machha Khola (Fish stream) name comes from, and then walk upstream towards Khola-Bensi village with Tatopani a place with natural 'hot spring'.

As walk continues where valley becomes much narrow and steeper, where our trail switches to the left bank of the river and then crossing a suspension bridge, after a short period of walk entering a patch of forest and then reaching Doban located on the high shelf of Buri Gandaki River.

Day 06: Trek to Jagat 1,460 - 05 hrs.

Morning walk leads across a broad gravel field towards Lauri stream and then crossing suspension bridge which leads to a climb on high trails and then descending into the open valley of Yara Khola, where our journey continues on for another hour to the village of Jagat.

Jagat a nice looking farm village of moderate size after Arughat; people here with mix race Magar, Chettries, Brahman, Manaslu Bhotia (Tibetan looking tribes) and some Newar people a lodge owner and shopkeepers.

Day 07: Trek to Lokpa 2,240 m via Philim 1,570 m - 06 hrs.

Walk from Jagat descends to long stone steps to reach a river, where path climbs on a terraced hillside at Saguleri, with distance view of Sringi Himal 7,187m, walk continue with ups and down the trail as our route reach at a bridge over Buri-Gandaki.

After crossing over a bridge where our trail winds up to reach at Philim village for short break and to observe this nice farm village with rich cultivated fields and terraces.

After a good refreshing stop at Philip, walk from here leads higher past scattered farm villages with a climb through terraces of golden fields of wheat’s and barley,  to reach a rocky ridgetop covered within bamboo forest area towards Eklai Bhatti means a lonely Inn, at present few more shops has been coming up.

After a rest walk towards Lokpa, where our route diverts toward North West to reach our overnight stop at Lokpa.

Day 08: Trek to Bihi Phedi 1,990 m -06 hrs.

Morning walk leads with some down section entering into sheer cliff walls after this dramatic section as our route continues on the much better path to reach Deng village, where houses and terrains completely change of more Tibetan like from here onward.

After a short good rest, a few hours walk leads you at Bihi a small village for an overnight stop, where people are more of Tibetan origin with ancient Buddhist culture.

Villagers of the area grow buckwheat, wheat, barley and potatoes as staple crops since trekking gain popular around the area, spinach, carrots and cabbages are also grown.

Day 09: Trek to Namrung 2,630 m / 8,629 ft - 05 hrs.

From here where you can feel cleaner and cooler air, as morning walk continues for another two hours to a steep-sided and scenic valley, encountering Mani prayer stone walls as walk leads at Ghap a nice village with a stop for a possible lunch break.

After Ghap walk altitude gains entering into alpine and coniferous woodland where path meanders with steep up as valley opens out with extensive pastures and then crossing a large stream flowing from the glacier of Lidana.

On walk grand views of Manaslu with the native name as Kutang (Manaslu) Himal range with Pang Phuchin 6,335m, Saula Himal 6,235m with many unnamed peaks of above 6,000m.

From here uphill as altitude gains at a slow pace as walk leads past farm village to reach at Namrung for an overnight stop, the village also called Sho Namru.

Day 10: Trek to Lo-Gaon 3,180 m - 05 hrs.

With a peaceful overnight stop at Namrung, walk leads to more spread out farm fields and Yak herder huts and shelter, around this high Manaslu valley people are much engaged in farming during summer, where young folks in winter travel to big cities of Nepal and India for trade and to escape the cold winter.

From here walk leads to high and scenic valley all the way to Lo Gaon a nice village for an overnight stop, this will be one of the attractive villages around Manaslu region, at Lo enjoy close views of towering Manaslu North Face,
Around Lo, visit its monastery with numerous chhorten and Mani walls with views of Ganesh Himal towards east.

Day 11: Trek to Sama-Gaon 3,530 m -05 hrs.

From Lo-Gaon walk is much easier but with a difference as high altitude wise where route leads to a slow and gradual climb with constant views of the mountain with Peak 29 ahead, after couple hour climb reaching into a patch of forest reaching at Shala village with an excellent view of Phungi, Manaslu and Himal Chuli.

Walking for a few hours further where day completes on reach Sama-Gaon village, with a superb view of Mt. Manaslu.

Sama-Gaon village one of the largest within high Manaslu Valley, where natives are mostly farmers cultivating buckwheat, barley which are the main crops in this high and harsh terrain, potatoes and some high and cold vegetables are also grown. Villagers around high Manaslu valley descended from South West Tibet way back more than 400 years of history were custom and culture of ancient Buddhist heritage similar to its origin Tibetan predecessor.

The local villagers are still active with trade and bartering across the border with Tibet taking few days to reach the frontier of Nepal and Tibet, actually located on old Trans Himalayan Salt Trade route of the two countries.

Day 12:  At Sama-Gaon rest day for acclimatization and local excursion.

A free and rest day in this interesting village to support acclimatization before heading higher towards Larke-la Pass, with spare day to explore this nice and scenic area and visit its old Monastery of Nyligpa (red hat sect) sect of Buddhism.

Day 13: Trek to Samdo 3,690 m - 05 hrs.
After a pleasant rest at Sama-Gaon, today a pleasant walk of more than four hours to reach the last village of Gorkha and Manaslu valley at Samdo, morning walk starts with slow climb as elevation gradually gains with dry much air which makes walk slower than earlier past days, trading slowly taking time for short break to enjoy surrounding beautiful views of peaks and dramatic terrain.

With an exciting walk on the high valley of Manaslu and then reaching Samdo village taking a short climb to reach a small flat plateau where village located, a moderate size village of more than forty houses with about two hundred villagers living this high harsh country.

Day 14:  Trek to Larke Phedi / Dharama-Shala 4,470 m - 04 hrs.

On leaving the last final village of upper Manaslu valley, where walk leads to the

end of the valley facing incredible views of snow-capped peaks of Manaslu which

is also known as Kutang in the local language.

As walk continues crossing few icy streams to reach Larke Phedi means the bottom

of the pass, also called Dharmasala (travellers rest house/shade), wherein old

days which was also known as Larkey Bazaar.

At Larke Phedi afternoon free for short walks and preparations for next early

morning long climb to cross high Larke-La pass and to reach Manang areas.

Day 15: Cross Larke-La 5,215 m / 17, 110 ft trek to Bhimthang 3,790 m -07 hrs.

After Larke Phedi, morning walk leads to steep climb over moraine of rocks and

Boulders, following north of Larke glacier, with grand views of Cho Danda with

Larke Peak.

As walk progress with gradual ascent and much steeper to reach the top of

Larke-la festooned with thousands of Buddhist colourful prayer flags.

At the top marvel excellent panorama of Himlung, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru and Annapurna II include series of Manaslu peaks.

From here a long descend reaching to a valley called Larcia, with a further hour

walks on moraine ridge to Tambuche at 3,900m, the bottom of the pass, and then a short walk leads to Bhimthang for an overnight stop after a long, tough day walks.

Bhimthang a lovely place located on a wide green valley with the number of lodges adorned with prayer Mani walls, the area surrounded by green tall trees of rhododendron-pines and oaks.

Day 16: Trek to Gho 2,760 m - 06 hrs.

From Bhimthang the rest of the journey is much easier with downhill walks with some

a short climb on route to Gho and Dharapani villages, morning with views of peaks

heading with the gradual walk into thick alpine woodland.

Walking into beautiful forested areas to reach a small clearing in the midst of

woodland at Gho for the overnight stop, a small cattle and yak herders summer

pasture and temporary settlement due to trekkers passing this route, where few

the lodge has been built to cater to the needs of travellers.

Day 17: Trek to Dharapani 1,725 m -05 hrs.

Today, the last day walk of this great adventure around Manaslu a pleasant and

leisure walks on downhill through a wooded country to reach Telje village, a nice

place by the raging Marysangdi River, with rest and stops last climb of the trip

from Telji after crossing a suspension bridge to reach large and nice lovely

Dharapani.

This village located on the junction of famous and popular Annapurna Circuit trail

and Around Manaslu Trekking route.

Dharapani located on a river gorge with lovely tree lines around where motorable

 has been constructed since the past few years, the village provides excellent lodges.

Day 18:  Drive back to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel with a free afternoon.

After a marvellous adventure around Manaslu, completing our scenic walks taking

a morning dive from Dharapani following Marysangdi River for sometimes past

Tal Besi-Chamje and Jagat villages, downhill to warmer low areas back into paddy

fields to reach a large town at Besisar, the headquarter of Lamjung district.

From Besisar switching to another vehicle for the exciting overland journey to

Kathmandu, where drive leads past many farm villages and town, as our drive

joins the main highway of Kathmandu and Pokhara at Dumre town, from here on

easy and interesting drive to reach back to the city life of Kathmandu, with the rest of the

evening free at leisure.

Day 19: Depart Nepal for international flight home-ward bound.
Last day in the country of Himalayan wonders, after an amazing experience and wonderful memories of Manaslu Circuit Trekking, and then depart from the hotel as per your flight time our staff transfers you to Kathmandu international airport for your homeward flight or to next respective countries.

Essential Info

Seasons and Climate:
Where one can join for this treks nearly all months of the year except monsoon wet months from mid-June to mid-September.

March to May lively and colourful with rhododendron (national flower of Nepal) and other wild-flower in full bloom, most days are clear with late afternoon cloudy with cooler morning and night time.October to early November another best months to trek when most of the days are clear for views but with short sun-lights and much cold and freezing temperatures in the morning and night including shades away from sunlight,

with chances of snow sometimes during autumn times including early spring season.

I availed Buna Trek’s Kathmandu Valley One Day Sightseeing Tour and it was truly one of the highlights of my stay in Kathmandu. Rudra was a spectacular tour guide and knew the city and its history like the back of his hands. I particularly enjoyed Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhunath Stupa. The tour was well organized and leisurely paced. The transfer from my hotel to the sites and stopovers were seamless and Rudra was very accommodating and cheerful during the entire trip.
